What is Theatre of the Oppressed?
“Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future, rather than just waiting for it."
(Augusto Boal)
Theatre of the Oppressed is a participatory artistic method created by Brazilian playwright Augusto Boal that encourages critical thinking and artistic representation of reality in order to raise awareness and shape concrete actions in society. It is a form of community education that uses theatre as a tool for change. Originally developed from Boal's work with peasants and workers from the poorest social classes, it is now used around the world as a tool for social activism, community education and community building.
